Establishing your new Sir Walter DNA Certified Lawn

Avoid heavy or concentrated use of new Sir Walter DNA Certified lawn for the first 2 -3 weeks to give the roots an opportunity to firmly knit with soil and to ensure that the turf will remain smooth.

Watering during establishment period:
Week 1: Water twice a day, preferably morning and afternoon.
Week 2: Water once a day but watering should be longer to encourage the roots to search deeper.
Week 3: Water 2 – 3 times per week.

Mowing: The first mow usually takes place in week 3. To make sure that your new lawn is ready, try lifting one corner of a turf slab. If it lifts you will need to wait a bit longer.

Rule of thumb when mowing your Sir Walter lawn is that mowing height matters! Never mow off more than 1/3 of leaf at a one time. We recommend that you keep your mower blades raised; don’t drop below 35mm for warm season grasses. During the hot, dry days of summer, it’s a good policy to let your grass grow just a little bit longer, so raise the mower height a little more than usual and your lawn will be better able to survive those summer scorchers – and of course it will look and feel great too.

Maintaining your Sir Walter DNA Certified Lawn

Watering: Once your new lawn has taken root, watering can be decreased to suit climatic conditions. If conditions are dry and/or windy, the lawn will require 2-3 deep waterings in summer per week or 1 per week in winter until full establishment of a deep root system (approx. 12 months). If your watering does not seem to be having effect we recommend using a wetting agent to eradicate dry spots. We recommend Lawn Lovers Lawn Soaker 2L. To test your soil moisture, push a 4” (100mm) probe or screwdriver into the ground. When you pull it out it should show signs of moisture up to the handle.

Fertilising: We recommend fertilising your lawn every 3 months; autumn, winter and spring. A fertilise over summer may be necessary if it is dry and we are not getting any storms or rain.

Pests: If you do get lawn pests such as the dreaded lawn grub or curl grub you need to get onto this immediately. The easiest way to rid yourself of these is the Amgrow Patrol Lawn & Beetle Pest Control, a granular product that controls lawn grubs, beetles, ants, earwigs, millipedes, mole crickets and slaters. Use on lawn or in garden beds. Alternatively you can use Lawn Lovers Grub Guard 2L. This premium pest control for lawns has an easy spray-on applicator that means you don’t need to handle any granulated chemicals or poisons or endanger breathing in any residue dusts.

Weeds: We believe that prevention is always better than a cure. If your lawn is kept healthy the weeds will struggle to establish. If you do have any weeds take hold, including bindi, clover, cudweed or thistles, we do recommend All Purpose Weed Control to get rid of them.

Sir Walter also loves a good dethatch in Spring to promote new growth. For more information check out our Lawn Renovation Guide page.
